Tarja Turunen returns to Bucharest – October 18 Arenele Romane

Bucharest, October 18th, Arenele Romane. Tarja descends upon Bucharest with her “In The Raw Touri”. This has to be one of the best Tarja shows I have seen. And I have seen 14 of them.
First of all, big thank you to Metalhead for bringing her to Arenele Romane. It felt weird after all these years to be at a Tarja show and not be seated, but freaking finally!!
I cannot say it was my favourite show of hers, but it was certainly different. 2 years of pandemic gave her time to rediscover her love for the stage and let her fine tune her show.

May be an image of 2 people and people standing

She re-orchestrated most of her song to give them all a bit of a common sound, making the show very homogenous and just flowing. There are songs where I would have preferred the studio version, such as Undertaker or Diva. However, I do appreciate the effort. It’s worth noting that now songs just went one into the other without dead times in between, making the show feel much smoother. And yet, nothing was lost in the public interaction. Tarja is always the artist who tried the most to speak some of the local language and always gives some of her best tries at Romanian.

Big props to Tarja’s band and crew as well. Just because she is the big name on the door doesn’t take away from how good they are. This time they also had a band solo, or as my boyfriend called it “my favourite moment of the show”. I am super happy to see Alex and Doug do more singing, Alex especially. Brings something extra to the live experience.

May be an image of 3 people, people standing, people playing musical instruments and indoor

The setlist was quite good. After all, this is the tour that should have been before the pandemic, to promote her “new” album. So of course, things are missing, but we got a few new ones (Serene, Silent Masquerade), a few older ones (Anteroom of Death), and a few throwback ones that we really enjoy (My Little Phoenix, Until My Last Breath, I Walk Alone). We even had a Nightwish classic (Wishmaster) and an acoustic moment. I absolutely love it when shows have acoustic parts, however, this one needed some more well known songs as well.

Overall, Tarja was just different, for the better This amount of energy and just happiness clearly shows her passion for it all. Even at the very end, she spent a few good minutes on stage after the band left to just take in the public and say thank you, which is rarely seen. So if you still get to see heron this tour, enjoy that!

On the not as wow side of the evening, I have to wonder why it was so hot in the heated tent. We have an energy crisis after all :)) and it wasn’t that cold outside. More than that, opening bands… I already said I have seen a few Tarja shows so I just know that the bands she brings on tour to open for her… Well they paid to be there. And that’s the kindest thing I can say. It’s never anything remarkable, which is a shame.

Last but not least, on a personal note, as I mentioned before this wasn’t my favourite show and something was missing I guess. I didn’t get the Ohmagad it is Tarja in front of me butterflies. Which is normal as I am getting older and I have seen not just many shows of hers, but a lot of shows in general. But it’s a bit of a bittersweet grief for all the passion and love I had for her, heading the fanclub, spending countless hours debating everything about her with other fans. Felt like the chapter of fangirling in my life ended, but I am glad we had a good show for that.

Maximum Rock Fest 2022

whoa! Maximum Rock Festival 2022 finished on Satursday night and honestly I don’t even know where to start from. This is gonna be a tough one to review.

Let me start by stating that I don’t think any of us understand just how hard it is to still organize a fest during these conditions, after the pandemic, with all the touring being delayed and cancelled, with everything going wrong and prices going up. The schedule suffered changes because of that and unforeseen events such as Blue Air defaulting on their payments and cancelling flights. That was so last moment and so out of the control of the promoter who did try their best and brought another act or gave longer sets to the bands already playing. However…

The biggest issue people have had with the fest was that back in 2019 they announced 250 lei tickets for Devin Townsend and Katatonia. I have friends who bought the tickets then to support the festival and get theirs ahead. Obviously, the pandemic happened so there was no 2020 fest. We did get a 2021 festival with Epica among others, but 2020 tickets remained valid for 2022 as well since it was a different line-up. People were excited to see what was gonna be announced for 2022, since it’s wide open and finally the pandemic is over. And the first thing that was announced was the price… 99 lei in pre-sale. Which is great to encourage people to buy a ticket not (for a less than stellar line-up). But it sure left a bitter taste to those people who still hang on to their ticket bought in 2019 that was 2.5x more expensive and couldn’t be refunded. Bummer. I saw a lot of people trying desperately to resell their tickets for a fraction of their price but to no luck.

That no luck brings us to the other harsh reality of the festival: the crowd was in low hundreds and it was definitely not enough to fill Arenele Romane. I don’t remember ever seeing the venue so empty… I feel bad for the promoter because this was a big loss. Out of the few people who were there, I imagine many had older tickets or had bought from people who were selling theirs, plus some guest passes … so overall this was bad. It’s always a bit bad for atmosphere when you look around and see empty space. However, I do feel bad for the bands bc it’s tough and a disappointment to play an empty venue.

Now let’s talk about the schedule. I see no reason why the headliner would start at 22:45. That’s when a normal festival would end. I get that if the first band would have started at 17:00 instead of 19:00 they would have probably only played for the people at the bad… but still. Especially when on both days there had been cancellations, there was some leeway with the hours. And on both day there ended up being delays.

Day One:

18.00 / Acces public
19.00 / Reverse The Moment
19.40 / Breathelast.
20.50 / TAINE
22.00 / Infected Rain

This was a day dedicated to romanian music so respect for that, with Moldovans from Infected Rain ending the night with an incredible show. Worth mentioning that it had started to rain just before Infected Rain (get it?) were supposed to get on stage, but it soon enough stopped and the show went on.

Infected Rain really put on a masterclass of energy and dedication, as they always do. They are a success story of what it means to work, work, persevere and work again. It was a show you couldn’t help but enjoy, even if you are not the biggest fan of their music or genre.

Day Two:

17.30 / Acces Public
18.30 / Aeon Blank
19.10 / Lupu’ cel Rau
20.15 / Subterranean Masquerade
21.25 / Týr
22.45 / MYRATH

Lupu’ cel Rau are always fun to see. I specifically told my US friend and photographer to go check them out because he might like them and apparently I was right. After all, who can resist a metal cover of Aha’s Take on Me?

Subterranean Masquerade were a very nice surprise for me, great show, pumping up the public. There was one moment where the singer really got close to the public to give that personal touch (pun intended) to the front rows. Really made for a special moment. They took it even further and went into the middle of the crowd (there are definitely perks when the audience is limited). Everyone was entertained and they put on a hell of a show! Probably the highlight of the festival.

Tyr took us to valhalla and back and it was nice to see the people in the front rows really be there for them and sing along.

Finally, Myrath came on stage well after 23:00. This was the biggest stage I was seeing them on and I expected big things from them. Which only came in the second part of the show. They had nice stage setting, and as usual something special in their outfits, invited a belly dancer on stage and a fire acrobat. However, something was lacking a bit in the beginning. I had seen them 4 times before and every time it was a banger but this time they didn’t feel hungry. For the first part of the show there was little to no interraction between the members (except for Zaher and Kevin who seemed to be discussing more technical things). But in the end the show picked up, the energy was there, smiles all around, closed the show with some bangers: No Holding Back, Believer, Endure the Silence. I guess that worked and everyone was hyped. so much so that zaher quickly came back to thank the crowd and say they would do one more song. That felt like a very organic encore where they asked for the promoter’s permission first and then discussed among themselves what to sing. Almost the whole band was back on stage, with Zaher announcing “Anis is probably in the toilet now, let’s wait for him some more” and a minute later joking “Oh it’s probably a big shit he’s taking” :)) That sure made it a memorable ending to the show and the festival

All in all, disappointment turnout in a not that exciting lineup amidst a sea of big events in this summer season. But kudos to the promoter for persevering against all odds and still holding the event. And fingers crossed there will be a Maximum Rock Fest 2023, bigger and better.

Nightwish in Bucharest – Romexpo 2022

Nightwish have done what they know best: reinvent themselves!

The evening started with Mister Misery, this weird horror metal band from Sweden. I had seen them before some years ago opening for Beyond the Black in a small-ish club in Germany, so this was definitely a step up. They were announced a week before the show and I think the crowd was very skeptical, but won over eventually. They were interesting to watch for sure.

This was my 5th Nightwish show and right from the beginning it didn’t look like any other. They came with way more lights, videos, and pyros. And when I say pyros… they went all out! The stage was on fire! To be honest, in the beginning the stage looked like Nightwish Eurovision version (and I don’t mean about that time 20 years ago when they did go Eurovision). I did appreciate that the sound was clear enough without being cranked to the maximum – things old people say, you know?. But all throughout we had a lot of fun! You just gotta give them that they are one of the great ones.

They started with some projections of the signs from their latest album and obviously a single from that one, Noise. Then came Planet Hell, funnily enough with a projection of the Romanian Parliament behind them. Because hell.. get it? :)) I don’t understand why they chose such an iconic Marko song as a single after he left, when they had just so much to choose from their back catalogue and bring something new for Floor to wow us on. She is great, truly. And Troy can also sing. But if your point two songs in is to show us that you’re still here without Marko, you are indeed showing us that you’re still here … without Marko.

Nightwish are able to create a setlist with essential songs. It might not be your favourite or the best of, but they always bring enough diversity so that they keep things interesting. Nothing wow this time around. We had some more songs from their latest album: Tribal, How’s The Heart, Shoemaker. I need to make a special point of saying how glad I am they are playing Shoemaker live after initially saying they would never do it since it’s too complicated. And I mean wow!! Floor is just in a league of her own. Throughout the concert we were amazed by her, but that was a big one. I am not even a Floor fangirl but this whole show seemed like “Floor Jansen and band” . Mostly because she was the one that shined the most and also the only one that really moved around the stage. Even Emppu who used to be a a human spring running around the stage has been rather reservered. We’re all getting old it seems. As for the rest, not much movement/crowd interraction. And that’s a big part of why we miss Marko, the wittiness, the friendliness. Troy tried to adress the public in a rather cringe-ish way “you are probably the best audience in the world” … okay Calsberg.

I think that was what I missed the most in the show… the connection. It’s true, I stayed in the “poor people” area all the way in the back, but it felt like something was lost. Nightwish are my favourite band so I am biased but somehow not right now. I feel like the production overtook the stage and the wow value of the pyros was more than the wow value of the stage presence. Like they were telling us they are a great band, not showing it. But they are still a great band and this was a killer show. It wasn’t the best Nightwish show that I have seen, but it was still Nightwish and that is enough on any day to have a great time.

Tuomas has mentioned many times that Nightwish is a well-oiled machinery that must keep going and I guess I felt a bit of that. Where you know they are big and have been doing this for some time, so they can create some magic big impact low effort (obviously not Floor. she was very high effort).

I think the show really picked up some speed when they pushed the pedal to the metal … pun intended with 7 Days to the Wolves, Dark Chest of Wonders, I Want My Tears Back. Now we’re having a party. And time for two absolute classics with Nemo and Sleeping Sun. God, Sleeping Sun is such a beautiful song and it made us all a bit weak in the knees to hear it.
Nothing wow in terms of setlist, especially considering how we last saw them with Decades. Or before that they played While Your Lips Are Still Red (and also Sleeping Sun).

Overall good show, impressive pyro, out of this world vocals from Floor. I don’t know how she does it. Or how she can headbang for that long. Ending the show with Last Ride of the Day, Ghost Love Score, and The Greatest Show on Earth like we’ve been accustomed to. It felt strange not to fangirl as I once used to and just enjoy the concert like a normal event. There was so much nostalgia in it. Nightwish are still great and they can deliver for sure. Once all the “50 year anniversary” bands do retire, Nightwish are really set to be among the biggest names you could get, so let’s hope they don’t retire soon.

Oh, the memories!

In concluzie, wow ce spectacol! Cand ziceau ca vin iar? 😀

Kiss – Show incendiar la Bucuresti

A fost din scurt anularea (as far as we know), dar parca ar fi mers sa primim ceva in plus.

Turcii abordeaza un still de heavy metal care chiar s-a potrivit in line-up.

Powerwolf au fost definitia “live life like you’re the main character” si au prestat. Ne-au cantat melodii mai cunoscute precum “Army of the Night”, “Armata Strigoi”, “Sanctified With Dynamite”, sau un mare final pe “We Drink Your Blood”. Am avut melodii pentru “girls”, si melodii pentru “men” :)) respectiv “Demons Are a Girl’s Best Friend” si “Resurrection by Erection”.

All in all, 10.5/10

Doamnelor si domnilor, the hottest band in the world, Kiss.

Desi cine nu se bucura sa auda “Shout It Out Loud”, “Heaven’s on Fire”, “Say Yeah”, “Lick it Up”, sau the one and only “I Was Made for Lovin’ You”. Un show cu 23 de melodii sau cum au zis chiar ei “we have old stuff, older stuff and the oldest stuff”.

At the end of the day, you had to be there! Intre atatea showuri mari anul asta, Kiss sigur vor fi unul memorabil si ma bucur ca am reusit sa ii vedem in Romania, chiar daca abia in turneul de retragere.
